The PFLAG National Scholarship Program is sponsored by Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) a national non-profit organization. In addition to the National Scholarship Program, there are many local programs, see below for more information.

Eligibility:

  • You are a graduating senior entering higher education for the first time, this calendar year (if you graduated in the past year and took a time off you are still eligible to apply).
  • Self identify as a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) or an ally
  • Demonstrate an interest in service to the LGBT community.
  • Have applied to an accredited U.S.higher education institution.
  • Cannot be receiving full tuition remission from other sources to fund the education (e.g., other full-tuition scholarships, established college trust fund, etc.)

 

To compete you must do the following:

  • Completed application form
  • One page essay
  • High School transcript
  • One reference
  • Completed release form
  • U.S. citizen
     

Many PFLAG chapters have scholarship programs of their own. The following list is not exhaustive, but it lists some of the programs that are available through local chapters.  

PFLAG Phoenix, AZ awards two scholarships each spring. 

PFLAG Tucson, AZ founded the Eugene Moore Memorial Scholarships.

PFLAG Sacramento, CA awards $1,000 scholarships each spring. Application packets are available by contacting the chapter at contact@pflagsacramento.org or the chapter Vice President at npbarth@earthlink.net. 

PFLAG San Diego County, CA offers four $1,000 scholarships to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender youth. 

PFLAG San Jose/Peninsula CT offers scholarships are for graduating high school seniors and students transferring from Community College to a four year college or university. 

PFLAG Hartford, CT offers the Brill Scholarships are named for Bob and Helen Brill, who co-founded PFLAG Hartford in 1981. 

PFLAG Pueblo, CO offers three scholarships of $250/semester, go to their website and select the “Foundation” link, or e-mail the chapter at PuebloPFLAG@yahoo.com. 

PFLAG Jacksonville, FL offers scholarships to both undergraduate and graduate students.  

PFLAG Indianapolis, IN offers one $500 scholarship for students accepted for enrollment by an institution of higher education or a vocational institution.  For more information, please send an e-mail to info@indypflag.org. 

PFLAG Lawrence/Topeka (Kansas), KS is awarding a $500 scholarship on May 30th to a LGBT individual or straight ally.  

PFLAG Louisville, KY offers a scholarship to help applicants pay for their post-secondary education.  

PFLAG New Orleans, LA has a scholarship for Louisiana residents.   

PFLAG Howard County, MD offers one $2000 scholarship each spring to recognize outstanding lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered (LGBT) and straight ally students.  

PFLAG Greater Boston, MA scholarship program awards $10,000 in scholarships to Massachusetts high school students who will be attending: a 4-year, 2-year college or a technical/vocational school. 

PFLAG Detroit, MI offers three $500 scholarships to college students who are connected directly with GLBT issues.  

PFLAG Santa Fe, NM gave 23 scholarships of $1000 last year. Each were awarded to deserving GLBT persons in Northern New Mexico, including Albuquerque

PFLAG New York City, NY offers The Richard Ashworth and Robert Benov Memorial Scholarship to LGBT students graduating from New York City High Schools.

PFLAG Salisbury/Rowan, NC will award two $1000 scholarships each spring.

PFLAG Greensboro, NC has established the Carter Stroupe Memorial Scholarship. This $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually in the spring.

PFLAG Cincinnati, OH has an extensive scholarship program. The awards are for higher education but students may apply while still in high school.

PFLAG Dayton will, OH award one $2,000 scholarship to an LGBT student and one $2,000 scholarship to a straight ally. The application (pdf) and referral form is available here.

PFLAG Sandusky/Firelands, OH awards two scholarships to graduating high school seniors in the amount of $500 and $250.

PFLAG Norman, OK Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship presented to an outstanding Norman Public School graduating senior who is an active participant of a Gay Straight Alliance.

PFLAG Houston, TX scholarships are awarded by the PFLAG/HATCH Youth Scholarship Foundation (HATCH stands for Houston Area Teen Coalition of Homosexuals).

PFLAG Salt Lake City, UT offers $1000 five (5) scholarships to matriculated college students and/or high school graduates. To apply, e-mail slcpflag@gmail.com.

PFLAG Richmond, VA sponsors an annual scholarship designed to foster activism and advocacy for and within the LGBT communities.

PFLAG Bellevue, WA offers scholarships to GLBT and straight allies.
