The Diabetes Scholars Foundation Scholarship Program is for high school seniors with Type 1 Diabetes who plan on attending an accredited four year university, college, technical or trade school. You must be actively involved in the diabetes community, have high academic performance, participate in community and/or extra-curricular activities and demonstrate that you are managing the challenges of living with diabetes.

Scholarship Awards:

The Diabetes Scholars Foundation offers the following scholarships to students who are high school seniors and will be incoming freshmen in the fall and who have Type 1 diabetes:

  • At least  five $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to students that will be incoming freshmen with Type 1 diabetes,
  • The Jay Franke Scholarship (one $5,000 and one $3,500) will be awarded to a student pursuing an Arts Degree (ie music, theater, dance),
  • The Bradley D. Gendron Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) will be awarded to a student residing in Colorado,
  • The Josh Smith Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) will be awarded to a student residing in Ohio,
  • The JDRF Medical/Research Scholarship ($1,000, two scholarships) will be awarded to a student majoring in Healthcare
  • The JDRF Advocacy Scholarship ($1,000) will be awarded to a student majoring in Political Science,
  • The JDRF Outreach Scholarship ($1,000) will be awarded to a student majoring in Mental Health (Psychology/Social Work),
  • The JDRF Rising Star Scholarship ($1,000) will be awarded to an incoming freshmen with Type 1 diabetes,
  • The Spibelt Athletic Scholarship ($1,000) will be awarded to a student athlete,
  • The Megaw Family Scholarship ($2,500) will be awarded to a student majoring in Science,
  • The Nicky Randazzo Memorial Scholarship ($3,200) will be awarded to a student majoring in Business,
  • The Phil Sutherland Scholarship ($1,000) will be awarded to a student athlete,

Eligibility:

  • High School Seniors with type 1 diabetes seeking a higher education at an accredited four year university, college, technical or trade school.
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Have contributed to diabetes research or advocacy through fundraising efforts, volunteering, public speaking, etc.
  • Have demonstrated exemplary academic performance.
  • Participates in community or extra curricular activities or sports.
  • Endorsement from Physician or CDE that demonstrates that they are managing their diabetes. HbA1c is not a criterion.
  • Letter of Recommendation from High School Counselor or Teacher.
  • Complete a personal essay.
