Barnes Scholarships

If you live in one of the following Florida counties, you may be eligible for the Barnes Scholarships: Citrus, Hernando, Pasco, Pinellas, Hillsborough.

The scholarships were created to help high academic achievers, who have overcome significant obstacles in their lives and who have financial need. The four winners can receive up to $15,000 per year for four years to attend any nationally accredited college or university.

The deadline to apply is October 15th.

Nursing Scholarships - National and Local

National

National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) offers the following awards for to honor Hispanic nurses for their work: Ildaura Murillo-Rohde Award for Education Excellence, the Henrietta Villaescusa Community Service Award, the Janie Menchaca Wilson Leadership Award, and the Sarah Gomez Erlach Humanitarian Award. Deadline: Early April.

Society of Women Engineers Local Scholarships

Young women who are interested in the science and engineering fields are encouraged to apply for the many scholarships sponsored by local chapters of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

Each section has a different deadline. In general they range from February to March.

Florida Black History Month Art and Essay Contest

Using the theme "Celebrating African-American Leaders in Business — Past, Present and Future", the state of Florida is sponsoring art and essay contests for students in grade K – 12.

The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties' Scholarship Program

The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties offers over 100 scholarships for students interested in nursing, real estate, farming, technology, healthcare and many other fields.  They have awarded more than $5 million in scholarships and grants since 1983.  Most scholarships are for high school seniors, but some are for adults returning to school, so review them carefully.  The deadline for applying for the scholarships is Febraury 1.  You can create an account

National Scholarships

Credit Union Scholarship

Credit Unions all over the country are offering high school students scholarships.  Because there are hundreds of credit unions and because their guidelines vary from one to the next here are some of the basics.  Most Credit Union Scholarships are for high school seniors with application deadlines in March.  The number and amount of scholarships vary.  In addition, there are other requirements like membership (it's not hard to do, just open an account), most require it, but not all.  Below is a listing of just of few of the credit unions that offer scholarships.

GEAR UP Scholarships

The GEAR UP program provides grants to local governments, some of the funds are also used to provide college scholarships to low-income students.  The program is a Federal discretionary grant program whose purpose is to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.  GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) serves students beginning no later than the seventh grade and follows them through high school.
